Reading context

Sayings of Confucius and his students, compiled over generations after his death in the fifth century BCE. It is not a treatise: it shows a teacher responding to particular people, and the same question gets different answers.

How to approach it

Read a few passages at a time rather than cover to cover. Books 2, 4 and 12 are a good start. Expect repetition and apparent contradiction, since the teaching is calibrated to the pupil.
