Nietzsche

Genealogy, nihilism, and the creation of values.

01 · The question

Nietzsche asked not whether moral claims are true but where they came from and what they do to those who hold them. Genealogy replaces justification as the primary method. Genealogy is a risky method and he knew it. Showing where a value came from does not show that it is false, and treating origin as refutation is a fallacy with a name. His defence is that certain values make claims about their own origins, presenting themselves as timeless, and those claims a history can genuinely damage.

02 · Master and slave moralities

In On the Genealogy of Morality he traces a shift from an ethics of strength and nobility to one of humility and restraint, arguing that the second grew from resentment and then presented itself as the natural meaning of good. The historical claims are contested; the diagnostic pressure is what endures. Genealogy asks what a morality does for the form of life that needs it. This method unsettles comforting self-descriptions because a value may present itself as selfless while serving revenge, weakness or the preservation of power.

03 · Affirmation

Eternal recurrence functions as a test: could you will your life again, in every detail? The Übermensch names a task rather than a type — the creation of values after inherited ones lose authority. Nietzsche's own writing is deliberately aphoristic, and reading him requires resisting slogans. Affirmation is not optimism. It is the harder task of saying yes to life without inventing a tribunal outside life that redeems suffering, failure and chance.

04 · Misuse and influence

His sister’s editing and later nationalist appropriation distorted the work badly; the texts themselves are hostile to nationalism and antisemitism. Reading the primary editions matters here more than with almost any other philosopher. The history of misuse is part of responsible reading. Nietzsche’s style invites quotation, but isolated aphorisms can invert his targets; careful reading follows the experiment across a whole work.
